Time to Plan the Next Adventure

My husband is a CPA, so he gets very busy during February, March, and April.  Perhaps very busy is a bit of an understatement; he leaves as I am waking up and gets home as I am falling asleep.  It’s a rough schedule for him, so he likes to have something to look forward to at the end of that craziness.  He likes to have our summer vacation planned by January so that he knows there is something positive at the other end.

The past two years we have done bike trips in Europe.  I was a bit apprehensive to do a group tour, as we have always planned our own vacations.  They were great, though.  We must some wonderful people, saw beautiful country side

Going through the planning stages of our next trip, brought to mind last year’s trip to the Dolomites in Italy.  This location is not what immediately comes to mind when one thinks of Italy, but is filled with stunning scenery, adorable villages, and excellent food.  It should be added to anyone’s list if you are looking to venture beyond the traditionally visiting location in Italy.

We began in the town of Bolzano.  It is located in northeastern Italy where the region has been tremendously influenced by Austrian and Germanic traditions.  One is just as likely to hear Italian as German in the streets or in the shops.  The pretzels are just as good as the pizza.  The region is certainly different than other areas of Italy, but no less interesting or beautiful.

Many of the rides were on bike paths such as this.  It is easier and safer than being on city streets.

Often along the way, there are beautiful places to sit, relax, and enjoy the view.

I was pretty proud of myself that I had made it to this point on the ride.   I had opted for the long and challenging route that day.

At the end of the each day, there is a calm oasis to call home for a night or two.IMG_3404

We have booked through Backroads for the two trips we’ve taken.  This year we are leaning toward a trip in France.  It seems it will either be Burgundy or Provence.  There were so many to chose from, the hardest part is deciding where to go.  They may seem a bit pricey, but just about everything is included.  It would be hard to put together a trip of this caliber for any less.

If you have considered a bike tour, I would highly recommend Backroads.
